El Backbone

Emily C. Guzman

Grade: 12

Card Number: 22

Refran: "The ones that work day to night for your food."

Card Description: For my Loteria Card, I wanted to share my thoughts on our immigrant agriculturalists. My main focus was on Mexican immigrants because of my personal connection to the topic. I chose immigrant farm workers as a subject matter because I know our farm workers are overlooked especially our immigrants.  The pieces' colors represent my culture by contrasting yellow with blue. As well as having the Mexican flag in the silhouette of the US. This card represents the importance of America's most overlooked workers. But I want the audience to see that even if they don't know it, we have a connection to agriculture, making agriculturalists the backbone of America.

Student Biography: My name is Emily Guzman, I'm 17 years old and a senior at Santa Maria High School. I'm the daughter of my mom who's from Michoacan and have three brothers and my step dad who is from D.F, Mexico. My Loteria was inspired by my connection to agriculture like my experience and my family's experience. My favorite part of the process was painting, though sketching was the hardest part. In the future, I hope to continue my advocacy for agriculture and be an Ag Teacher.
