El Inmigrante

Carolina Alvarez-Novoa

Refran:  "The man that works hard in order to give his kids a yard."

Card Description: I chose immigrants as a subject matter because it's in my family history and I think it's important to discuss what happens in our community and doing our part in making it better. The colors in my piece like green represent the fields and I also made the man sleeping on the floor darker to represent people of color. For me personally, this card represents where I come from and the struggles of my community. I want the audience to see if they relate to this in anyway or as an opportunity to learn about others with a different background.

Student Biography: My name is Carolina Alvarez-Novoa, and I am a senior at Santa maria high school. I live in Santa maria California with my parents, Maria and Jose Alvarez. My parents are from Michoacan Mexico, and I have 5 siblings that are also first generation that I am grateful to have in my life. My parents are what inspired me to draw my loteria card because I've seen some of the hardship, they have gone through coming from low-income families and coming here as immigrants. I have heard their life stories and the sacrifices they have made along the way, and it never ceases to amaze me how resilient my parents are. I enjoyed the process of creating this, I got to be creative and express how I feel about this topic. Life after high school will be me continuing my education and enjoying life as it comes, and I hope it's filled with incredible opportunities.
