Refran: "Smoking doesn't take stress away, 

it takes family away."

Card Description: For my Loteria Card I wanted to share my thoughts on smoking. I chose smoking as a subject matter because of my personal experiences with smoking and how it has affected my life. I wanted to show everyone how harmful it can be to your body, to your personal life and how it can ruin your relationships especially with your family. For me personally, this card represents my siblings, well mainly my oldest brother. He started smoking when he was around 13 and hasn’t stopped and now that he’s all grown up 29 it has been hard for him to stop and has almost ruined his marriage and family. But I want the audience to see how some actions can ruin what you love most. I understand people do it because they want to relieve stress, or they just get peer pressured into it, but at the end of the day you should care about your health and how your family and loved ones would feel if you got lung disease and are so close to death. Also, there is secondhand smoke and that can affect your little siblings, your grandparents, or really anyone in your life. that can put them at risk for lung cancer and other serious health problems. My refran is “Fumando no quita el estrés, quita la familia,” which translates to, “Smoking doesn't take stress away, it takes family away.” I chose this as my refran because normally when people smoke it is because they are stressed and they just want to get out of the real world, but in reality, all it does is affect your relationship with your family.

Student Biography: My name is Perla Delgado and I am a Senior at Santa Maria High School. I live in Santa Maria, California with my mom, my dad, 2 brothers, and my sister. What inspired me to draw my Loteria card was my big brother, because he was the first close person to me that smoked and I actually got to see the affects it has to someones person life. The artistic process was I felt like I knew the big elements that I wanted on my card. I wanted to show how smoking can effect your family and wanted to show the 2 main ways people smoke. Like normally older people smokes cigarettes and the younger generations smoke with pens or vapes. Life after high school will be majoring in Agriculture Education to be come an Agricultural teacher and then become an activities director.
