Student Biography: My name is Natalia Murguia. I was born and raised in Santa Maria, California and I come from a Mexican family of four. In my free time I enjoy playing soccer and spending time with my family and friends. My plans after high school include hopefully getting accepted to San Diego State University to pursue my major in nursing. The message that I was conveying through my artwork and refran, “dance makes eyes glimmer with delight like the sparkling stars in the night”, was how ballet folklorico embraces the Mexican culture with the beauty in its dances. In my artwork I included a pretty woman with her traditional folklorico skirt, which is flowing around her as she is dancing to the music. I included flowers surrounding her to play as the audience for her performance, as it is common for people to gift flowers after a folklorico performance. These elements help me achieve my message by demonstrating how folklorico appeals to the human eyes. My sources helped influence my artwork by showing pictures of many dancers as they are performing live in front of audiences. I also came across lots of flowers when I was doing my research of ballet folklorico, so I wanted to be sure to include flowers in my artwork.
