Student Biography: My name is Katherine Gomez-Solis. I was born in Santa Maria, California and come from a family of four. I have a passion for music, love exploring new places and really enjoy time spent with my family and friends. After I graduate I hope to attend a four year college in order to become an athletic trainer. I was hesitant to paint a girl because I didn’t want to portray a stereotype. I understand completely that anyone of any age, race, or gender can have an eating disorder. but it is mostly seen in younger girls. As much as I wanted to show that anyone could have an eating disorder I was truly drawn to painting a little girl. I tried to use darker colors in order to show what she was feeling. I chose to draw the fridge and the little girl alone to show that in that situation the decision made in that moment is reflected on the way you feel for the rest of the day. Even then I still felt like the painting itself was plain and that the title “El eating disorder” was just too basic, too literal. My refran really helped me bring my painting to life. “The emotional emptiness is far greater than a physical solution.” This means that food will never fix the situation that one might be in. Whether one eats or not, it won’t make a difference. I could say that one way or another my relationship with food is reflected in this painting.
