El machismo

Marisol Armenta Mora

Refran: "Oh women, who but you could warm my tub. If not for you, who would scrub and rub the suds."

Card Description: For my Loteria Card I wanted to share my thoughts on machismo. I chose as a subject matter because my own personal experiences moved me to. The colors in the piece represent how the kitchen is seen as where women belong, hence the use of the color pink. The images in the piece represent one of the many domesticated jobs women are "born to do." For me personally, this card represents how heavily gender based simple life skills are such as cooking and taking care of children. I want the audience to see and be able to interpret the meaning behind why I chose to depict a kitchen with the symbol associated with the female gender.

Student Biography: My name is Marisol Armenta-Mora, and I am a senior at Santa Maria High School. I live in Santa Maria, California with my mom, dad, younger sister, and older brother. My family is from Mexico, in my Loteria card, I chose to represent machismo. What inspired me to draw my Loteria card was my own personal relation with machismo as it has been all around me ever since I was young. As it is very common among my peers, these harmful ideologies are being passed down to the younger generation and my goal was to spread awareness by what I choose to depict in my drawing. The artistic process was quite challenging as there were so many ways one could go about it. Life after high school will be hopefully common as I strive to travel and learn about the many different types of cultures.
