El adicto

Liz L Basurto Benito

Grade: 12

Card Number: 6

Refran: "It's hard to get, it's hard to chase, but it gives me so much grace."

Card Description: For my Loteria Card I wanted to share my thoughts on drugs. I chose drugs as a subject matter because it’s something important to spread around the community. The colors in the piece represent how it’s nature that is causing this type of drug to be produced, and how it’s harmful to the people that live off this plant. The images in the piece represent how a man is chasing after a drug because in his mind he thinks that he needs it to be happy and to feel at ease. For me personally, this card represents how many people of any age are so quick to run to drugs for some help. I want the audience to see how drugs not only affects the adults but also the younger generation that is coming.

Student Biography: My name is Liz Basurto Benito, and I am a senior at Santa Maria High School. I live in Santa Maria, California with my parents and with 4 sisters. My parents and oldest sister were from Mexico and my younger sisters, and I were born here in the city. In my Loteria card. I chose to represent drugs. What inspired me to draw my Loteria card was to bring awareness to this topic since it’s so common for young kids and adults to get addicted to it. The artistic process was very entertaining and very fun to do. The challenged I faced was painting; I dislike painting and find it hard to paint colors since the brushes are hard to control, but overall, it was very fun to draw and paint the Loteria card. Life after high school will be challenging in its own way so I’ll have to face many obstacles alone but hopefully all my efforts create a huge change for my family and me.
